Efficient, Effective, Ethical County Management:

  • helping hand
    Archuleta County Planning Commission since 2005 – currently Vice Chair – Presently working on programs, policies, and mapping to complete the implementation of the Archuleta County Community Plan, and currently working on development of programs and processes to increase efficiency of the application process and to facilitate growth and development that is of benefit to our community, providing for natural areas, recreational opportunities, and affordable housing.
  • Southwest Land Alliance Director (SLA) 1996 to 2002 and Chair of the Board 2001 and 2002 – volunteer, instrumental in a major rewrite of the bylaws, protocol, procedures, policies, and literature. Managed on a low budget producing increases in productivity, public exposure, and facilities – SLA is a local non-profit land trust assisting local landowners with their conservation easements
  • Admiral’s Photographer – good will tour of South America 1962 – organized, built, trained worker, and managed a photo shop on a Destroyer, while attending to the photo needs of the Admiral.
  • Treasurer – 650 member Gray Wolf Ski Club – 2007 – instrumental in the development of upgrades to the bylaws and the management and budgeting procedures
  • Part-time ski technician at Ski & Bow Rack during the winter – 2000 to present – responsible for management of equipment, technical processes and procedures, and training of workers

Consensus Building:

  • Married to his wife, Windsor for 40 years
  • Planning Commissioner, active participant, in the development of the current Archuleta County Land Use Code and Zoning Map
  • Pagosa Springs Citizens Advisory Committee 2005-2006 – Town Comprehensive Plan – long range planning for the town and for the interaction of land use planning between town and county.
  • Archuleta County Citizens Task Force 2003-2004 – development of proposals for implementation of the county’s Community Plan
  • Archuleta County Community Plan Steering Committee 2000-2001 – Outreach to the public for development of our community plan with 27 workshops and public meetings throughout the county.
  • Archuleta County Vision Committee 1999-2000 – Development of proposals for Archuleta County to proceed to the development of a Community Plan.

Responsible and Sustainable Fiscal Management:

  • Private Business – Hand Engraving and Inlay – 1963 to present day, doing custom decorations for banjo and guitar builders and companies in Japan, Europe, Australia, and the USA. Local customers include the House of Muskets; Builder, Bill Graef; and musicians Randall Davis and Carson Park
  • Private Business – Owns and manages a tree farm in Archuleta County since 1996. Member of the American Tree Farm System, and active with local timber management and forest products groups.
  • Private Business – Longwool and Natural Colored Wool Sheep Farm for 25 years in Amesville, Ohio. Developed and promoted our own retail markets for sheep products, including packaged meat, hand spinning wool, wool for doll hair, and deluxe longwool sheep pelts.
  • Lincoln Longwool Sheep Breeders Assoc. – instrumental in the development of the registry for Natural Colored Lincoln Longwool Sheep. Working with 5 other investors, coordinated the purchase and importation into North American of a flock of Wensleydale Longwool Sheep from England.
  • Premier Breeder – 5 years in a row at the Sheep and Wool Festival, Friendship Maryland, the largest wool sheep show in the nation.
Community Involvement:
  • Music in the Mountains volunteer
  • Mountain High Gardeners – developed bulk purchases for members, organized the construction of the Senior Center Garden, voted gardener of the year in 2006
  • Archuleta Citizens Forum – key organizer and developer of bylaws, working as a citizen advocate in 2001 to bring citizens together to discuss and address pressing community issues – promoting citizenship and community.
  • Participated in the development of a rural arts and crafts school, 1982, for a depressed, defunct coal mining community in S.E. Ohio

Education:

  • Ohio University – BFA in Photography, Sculpture, and Ceramics and MFA in Ceramics. As a Graduate Student, developed and managed a new ceramics department at the O.U. Lancaster Branch.
